  • School Librarian of the Year - Regional Level

    This award recognizes outstanding VAASL school librarians. All nominees must be VAASL members in good standing.

    Nominations must include:

    Part 1:  Nomination Form – completed by a friend, colleague, or supervisor of the nominee

    Upon receipt of the application, the Regional Director-Elect will email a confirmation. The Regional Director-Elect will choose a panel to evaluate the nominees and select a winner. These panel members will not be connected with any of the nominees, and could be selected from local universities, retirees, or from the public library system.

    The REGIONAL LEVEL VAASL SCHOOL LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR will be announced at the Spring Regional Conference. A plaque will be awarded at that time, and the winner’s Fall Conference registration and banquet fee will be paid by VAASL.

    The regional winners will be candidates for VAASL STATE LEVEL SCHOOL LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR. This state winner will be honored at the Fall Awards Celebration and receive an engraved crystal award, basic conference registration and $500.00 for professional development.

  • Administrator of the Year Award

    This citation is made by VAASL to the administrator of a school, group of schools, or institution of higher education for supporting the development of an exemplary library media program and for making an outstanding and sustained contribution advancing the role of the library media program as an agency for the improvement of education.  Eligible are state or division superintendents and building principals currently in administrative office and directly responsible for broad instructional leadership, such as assistant superintendents, directors of instruction, and directors of elementary or secondary education; deans, assistant deans, presidents and vice-presidents of institutes of higher education.  Not eligible are: retired administrators, school library supervisors, and directors of instructional media centers.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member containing a statement of the nominee’s contribution toward furthering the role of the library program, brief biographical information, address and phone number of nominee.
    3. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.
    Recipient receives a plaque and an honorary life membership in VAASL, currently valued at $500.00 and paid admission to the Awards Banquet. APPLY NOW Deadline: March 31st, 2017.
  • AASL Presentation Award

    A grant of $500 shall be awarded to a member who has been accepted to do a presentation at AASL.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. Official notification of having presented a favorably received session at a VAASL conference,
    3. Copy of the AASL session proposal (with VAASL logo on any handouts) submitted to the review committee,
    4. Official notification of acceptance from AASL.

  • Dickinson Scholarship Award

    The Dickinson Scholarship Award shall be given or college tuition to a library media specialist in active service or a person entering the library media profession. The cash award will be mailed to the college the year the award is granted. The award also includes basic Fall Conference Registration fee, an awards banquet ticket, two hotel nights (single rate), and an honorary VAASL membership for one year. The Award shall be made on the basis of sound scholarship, potential for excellence in the profession, character, financial need only in case of equal merit in all other respects.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A letter from the candidate stating brief philosophy of the role of school librarian, name of college to which the candidate has or will be accepted, current place of employment, home address and name of local newspaper,
    3. Three letters of recommendation: (from school librarian or college instructor in library science, school principal or college adviser, and a person outside of school profession),
    4. A summary of the applicant’s scholastic record.

  • Friend of VAASL Award

    A plaque and appropriate citation are presented to an individual, group or organization who have recognized the important roles of library media and educational technology in the instructional program.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. Letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: statement of the nominee’s recognition of the important roles of library media and educational technology in the instructional program, brief biographical information and address and phone number of nominee.
    Note: Nominations may include a school board, school board member, legislators, businesses, community leader, volunteer program, national, state, or local organizations. This award is presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet.

  • Honorary Life Membership

    A plaque and appropriate citation are presented to a retiring member of VAASL for contributions to the field during the honoree’s years of service. An honorary life membership in VAASL is also presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: statement of nominee’s contribution toward the library field, brief biographical information and address and phone number of nominee.
    3. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.

  • Meritorious Service Award

    A plaque and honorary life membership are presented to an active or retiring member of VAASL based on performance of service to VAASL. This award is presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: statement of the nominee’s contribution and service to VAASL, brief biographical information and address and phone number of nominee.
    3. Two letters of support from other persons who have knowledge of their work with VAASL.

  • Rutherford Memorial Award

    Given in honor of Margaret Elizabeth Rutherford, this award is available to a VAASL member in active service to be used for professional growth and development, including college tuition, conferences, workshops, or other project expenses up to a $1,000 award. This award is presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A one page letter from applicant explaining how the award money would be used for professional development,
    3. A letter of recommendation from library supervisor, district superintendent or district curriculum leader,
    4. A letter of recommendation from the principal or assistant principal with whom the applicant is currently working.

  • School Library Educator of the Year

    A plaque and appropriate citation are presented in recognition of outstanding contributions in developing educational media and technology programs and for professional leadership in the field. Groups, as well as individuals, may place a name in nomination. This award is presented at the Fall Conference Awards Banquet. Nominations must include:
    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: statement of the nominee’s qualifications and accomplishments in developing educational media and technology programs and for professional leadership in the field, brief biographical information and address and phone number of nominee,
    3. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.

  • School Library Program of the Year

    This award recognizes a VAASL School Library Program which is fully integrated into the school’s curriculum and as such is central to the learning process. Nominations may be made by school librarians, teachers, and administrators. School librarians may nominate their own program. The librarian(s) of the program nominated must be VAASL member/s in good standing. This award is based upon and closely follows the guidelines established by AASL for the National School Library Media Program of the Year award; as such applicants should look at and consider the criteria for that award. The award, a plaque, is presented at the Fall Awards Banquet. The librarians for the School Library Program of the Year are expected to present a session at the next fall conference.

    Nominations must include:

    1. A VAASL Nomination/Application form
    2. Written statements by the applicant that cover the following:
    • A library mission statement and evidence that shows how well the mission of the library is integrated into the mission, goals and objectives of the school. Does not exceed one double-spaced page.
    • Evidence to show how the school library program practice their commitment to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information, as well as exemplifying implementation of AASL’s learning standards and guidelines. Does not exceed four double-spaced pages.
    • Evidence of ongoing outreach initiatives to parents and/or the larger community. Does not exceed one double-spaced page.

  • Follett Library Resources' - Weed and Feed Grant

    Purpose
    To provide $1000 in books and/or e-books to a school library in Virginia.

    Follett Library Resources is proud to play a part in the healthy growth of Virginia’s school libraries through their free collection development services as Titlewave, Titlewise and Titlecheck. To this end, at least one school library that has shown substantial initiative in improving their existing collection through weeding, and has shown need for additional book funds, will be awarded $1000 in free books from Follett Library Resources at the fall VAASL conference.

    Criteria
    Each application will be judged on the basis of:

    • The improvement in average copyright age and/or circulations after weeding of the book collection.
    • The degree of need for additional materials in the book collection and lack of sufficient available funding.
    • The soundness of the rationale for collection improvement.

    Guidelines

    • All applicants must be current personal members of VAASL at the time the application is submitted.
    • Complete both the Application Cover Sheet and Grant Documentation Forms.
    • Both the head librarian and the school principal must sign the application cover sheet and then scan into pdf format.
    • Applications must be sent electronically no later than July 15th. Please email application attached with the other criteria as one pdf document to awards@vaasl.org
