  • School Librarian of the Year - Regional Level

    This award recognizes outstanding VAASL school librarians. All nominees must be VAASL members in good standing.

    Nominations must include:

    Part 1:  Nomination Form – completed by a friend, colleague, or supervisor of the nominee

    Upon receipt of the application, the Regional Director-Elect will email a confirmation. The Regional Director-Elect will choose a panel to evaluate the nominees and select a winner. These panel members will not be connected with any of the nominees, and could be selected from local universities, retirees, or from the public library system.

    The REGIONAL LEVEL VAASL SCHOOL LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR will be announced at the Spring Regional Conference. A plaque will be awarded at that time, and the winner’s Fall Conference registration and banquet fee will be paid by VAASL.

    STATE School Librarian of the Year: The regional winners are the candidates for this award. An updated application with all information indicating contributions and accomplishments in the field should be sent to the Scholarships and Awards Committee Chair. The winner will be honored at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet and receive an engraved crystal award, basic conference registration fee (by reimbursement), and $500.00 for professional development.

  • Administrator of the Year Award

    A plaque is awarded by VAASL to the administrator of a school, group of schools, or institution of higher education for supporting the development of an exemplary school library program and for making an outstanding and sustained contribution advancing the role of the school library program as an agency for the improvement of education. Honorary life membership in VAASL and a conference banquet ticket is awarded. The award will be presented at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet.

    Please provide the following:

      1. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member containing a statement of the nominee’s contribution toward furthering the role of the library program as well as brief biographical information of the nominee
      2. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee Recipient receives a plaque and an honorary life membership in VAASL, currently valued at $500.00 and paid admission to the Awards Banquet.

  • AASL Presentation Award

    A grant of $500 and a citation shall be awarded to an active VAASL member who has been accepted to do a presentation at AASL. The winner will be honored at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A letter from the candidate stating briefly why he/she wants to attend AASL
      2. Copy of the AASL session proposal (with VAASL logo on any handouts) submitted to the review committee 3. Official notification of acceptance from AASL

  • Dickinson Scholarship Award

    The Dickinson Scholarship Award is presented to a person entering the library profession, or a school librarian in active service, to go toward college tuition for a school library program. The award will be presented at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet. The award includes a citation, free conference registration, two nights in a hotel room for the conference, a banquet ticket, and $1500 for college tuition.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A letter from the candidate stating his/her brief philosophy of the role of school librarian, the name of the college/university to which the candidate has or plans to be accepted, current place of employment, and name of local newspaper
      2. Three letters of recommendation: (from school librarian or college instructor in school librarianship, school principal or college adviser, and a person of the applicant’s choosing)
      3. A brief summary of the applicant’s scholastic record

  • Friend of VAASL Award

    This award is presented to an individual, group, or organization that has recognized the important roles of school library programs and educational technology in the instructional program. The winner will receive a plaque and be honored at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet.

    Nominations must include:

      A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: A statement of the nominee's recognition of the important roles of the school library and educational technology in an instructional program as well as brief biographical information of the nominee.

  • Honorary Life Membership

    A plaque and honorary life membership are presented at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet to a retiring member of VAASL for contributions to the field during the honoree’s years of service.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: A statement of the nominee’s contribution toward the field of school librarianship as well as brief biographical information of the nominee.
      2. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.

  • Meritorious Service Award

    A plaque and honorary life membership are presented at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet to an active or retiring member of VAASL based on performance of service to VAASL.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A letter of nomination for a retiring VAASL member to include: A statement of the nominee's contribution and service to VAASL as well as brief biographical information of the nominee.
      2. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.

  • Rutherford Memorial Award

    Given in honor of Margaret Elizabeth Rutherford, this award is available to a VAASL member in active service to be used for professional growth and development. The winner will be honored at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet with a citation and a $1000 award intended for professional development including college tuition, conferences, workshops, or other project expenses.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A one-page letter from the applicant explaining how the award money would be used for professional development.
      2. Two letters of recommendation as follows:
      A. Letter of recommendation from school library supervisor, district superintendent, district curriculum leader, etc.
      B. Letter of recommendation from the principal, assistant principal, dean, or assistant dean with whom the applicant is currently working .

  • School Library Educator of the Year

    A plaque is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions in developing school library programs and for professional leadership in the field of school librarianship. The winner will be honored at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet. Nominations must include:
      1. A letter of nomination from a VAASL member to include: A statement of the nominee's qualifications and accomplishments in developing educational school library and technology programs and for professional leadership in the field. Also include brief biographical information of the nominee.
      2. Two letters of support from other persons who work with or for the nominee.

  • School Library Program of the Year

    In recognition of excellence in a school library program, a plaque will be presented at the Fall Conference Author/Awards Banquet. The librarian(s) in the program nominated must be member(s) of VAASL in good standing.

    Nominations must include:

      1. A library mission statement and evidence that shows how well the mission of the library is integrated into the mission, goals, and objectives of the school (not to exceed one double-spaced page).
      2. Evidence to show how the school library program practices its commitment to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information, as well as exemplifying implementation of AASL's learning standards and guidelines (not to exceed four double-spaced pages).
      3. Evidence of ongoing outreach initiatives to parents and/or the larger community (not to exceed one double-spaced page).
      4. Two letters of support: One from an administrator and one from a teacher with whom the applicant is currently working.

  • Follett Library Resources' - Weed and Feed Grant

    Purpose
    To provide $1000 in books and/or e-books to a school library in Virginia.

    Follett Library Resources is proud to play a part in the healthy growth of Virginia’s school libraries through their free collection development services as Titlewave, Titlewise and Titlecheck. To this end, at least one school library that has shown substantial initiative in improving their existing collection through weeding, and has shown need for additional book funds, will be awarded $1000 in free books from Follett Library Resources at the fall VAASL conference.

    Criteria
    Each application will be judged on the basis of:

    • The improvement in average copyright age and/or circulations after weeding of the book collection.
    • The degree of need for additional materials in the book collection and lack of sufficient available funding.
    • The soundness of the rationale for collection improvement.

    Guidelines

    • All applicants must be current personal members of VAASL at the time the application is submitted.
    • Complete both the Application Cover Sheet and Grant Documentation Forms.
    • Both the head librarian and the school principal must sign the application cover sheet and then scan into pdf format.
    • Applications must be sent electronically no later than July 15th. Please email application attached with the other criteria as one pdf document to awards@vaasl.org
